The textured sculptures and wall pieces I create have echoes of the landscapes and seascapes where I like to spend time; places where I feel truly free. The artworks evoke a sense of beauty and a certain loss and loneliness, at once life-affirming and uncertain.
The touch and smell of new linen and fresh cotton is always exciting. And I particularly enjoy the physicality of the making process as the material is wrapped and manipulated to transform it into a 3D form. As my hands create the textures, I have the feeling of a profound sense of history bound into the fabric. I am reminded of the creativity and industriousness of my mother, of skills passed on from one generation of women to the next. The energy expended in the construction flows through the sculpture as light plays on the textured surface and animates the form.
